Barcelona will reportedly consider a summer move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.

According to Moises Llorens of AS, the Blaugrana have been admirers of Alaba for a long time, and he would be an adaptable option to add to their squad at the back.

It's reported technical secretary Robert Fernandez "is understood to have asked president Josep Maria Bartomeu to find the funds to go after the versatile Austrian international, who can play at left-back, in central defence or in midfield."

It's reported that Bayern have no intention of selling the defender, who has blossomed into one of the best left-backs on the planet. The club's chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is quoted as saying Alaba is "essential to us and to the structure of the team."

Bayern's reluctance is understandable, especially given Alaba is tied down to a long-term contract.

Despite often playing in defence, Alaba is capable of conjuring moments of brilliance, as the Bayern Twitter account reminded us recently:

It's difficult to pinpoint any major weaknesses in the 25-year-old's game, having shone at the highest level for Bayern since bursting onto the scene as a teenager in 2010.

Going forward he is full of energy and aggression, while Alaba also possesses the quality and composure to create chances for team-mates. He doesn't negate his responsibilities at the back, either, as he is aware and positionally smart on the rare occasion the Munich giants have some defending to do.
He's a world-class talent that would improve any squad in the game. However, looking at the Barcelona setup it's not clear where he'd fit into the XI.

After all, in Jordi Alba the Blaugrana have arguably the finest left-back in world football at the moment. Per OptaJose, the full-back has a tremendous understanding with Lionel Messi:
As a result, it's difficult to see Barcelona breaking the bank for Alaba. Especially given they've spent enormous money to secure Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho in the previous two transfer windows.

Plus, Alaba has been settled at Bayern for a long time now and is part of a team consistently challenging for the biggest honours.
