Despite the ubiquity of face masks and some social-distancing measures, photos from the reopening on May 11 looked largely familiar to fans of the parks. Guests canoed, snapped selfies and took a spin on Dumbo the Flying Elephant. They even held parades and took in shows — with noticeably more distance between families than a usually jam-packed Disneyland parade route.

The park is operating at 20% capacity for the time being, and tickets are being released in batches: tickets for the first day sold out in three minutes. Entry times are staggered to further space out guests, and half-day tickets, with entry starting at 2 p.m., are also available.

Once at the parks, guests must have their temperature taken, show a QR code on their phone that proves they haven’t tested positive for COVID-19, and wear a face covering at all times (except while eating). High-touch areas are undergoing extra sanitation, and hand sanitizer is provided at the exit of every ride.

But if Californians and tourists domestic and international think they’ll be experiencing that joy at Disneyland anytime soon, they’re likely to be disappointed. Disneyland isn’t allowing hotel reservations for its on-site properties until early July, indicating the company itself isn’t bullish about a June miracle.

Disney has been tight-lipped about its reopening plans in Anaheim, but they’ve begun to establish a pattern: First open the shopping district outside of the park, then expand to the parks themselves. They did that with Shanghai’s Disney Town and, on May 20, Disney Springs in Orlando is set to reopen.
